Immaculate Conception Church

The main parish church and one of the town's oldest religious institutions

La Concepción is linked to the earliest years of the Spanish town and to a plaza that became a centre of religious, commercial and civic life.

The main church of an early river settlement

Banco de la República sources associate the establishment of the main church with 1541, shortly after the Spanish foundation of Mompox. Religious organisation therefore accompanied the institutional development of the town from its earliest decades.

Its plaza became one of the principal spaces in the river-oriented urban system. Rather than having only one dominant square, Mompox developed several important plazas along the Magdalena.

The building visible today is not an untouched sixteenth-century structure. Repairs, collapses and reconstructions changed the church over time, making it an example of heritage created through continuity rather than complete physical immobility.

Reconstruction and changing architecture

Architectural studies distinguish La Concepción from churches such as Santa Bárbara or San Agustín because its fabric was more extensively rebuilt. Nineteenth-century damage and subsequent reconstruction help explain the mixture of historical layers visible today.

Each rebuilding responded to the needs of the community, liturgical practice and the public role of the main parish church. Its scale reflects its importance within the town.

The nearby river also places the church within the larger history of Mompox as a commercial port whose religious and civic spaces were never separated from the rhythms of trade.

Religious memory and urban heritage

La Concepción remains a reference point in Mompox's religious calendar, including the processional geography of Holy Week.

UNESCO's 1995 inscription protects the church as part of an urban system. Its value depends on the relationship between the building, its square, surrounding houses, streets and the river-oriented form of the historic centre.

For visitors, the church offers a way to understand the earliest institutional history of Mompox and the long process through which a colonial parish remained relevant across several centuries.

The history is based on heritage, institutional and historical sources. Dates from secondary chronologies are treated as historical references rather than unquestionable facts when documentation differs.
